19C France

While girls in 19C France did not go to school, many grisettes -- young flirty working women, who often participated in sex work part-time -- did have live-in relationships with male students. The male student would provide her shelter, and in exchange for that, she would provide him her company and serve domestic duties. The male student would often act disrespectfully towards his grisette and the unequal nature of these relationships resemble prostitution.

In addtion to the relationships between grisettes and male students resembling prostitution, grisettes were also similar to modern day college student sex workers in that they partook in conspicous consumption and loved to dress up to display their social status. 19C French society is the first example of there being a widespread phenomenon of women taking part in relationships so that they can live more luxurious lifestyles.
