Japanese College Student Sex Workers

Before the economic bubble burst in the late 1980's, the most common reason for Japanese college students entering sex work used to be for conspicuous consumption. For such students, sex work was a fast, efficient way to make enough money to afford luxurious goods and still have sufficient time to attend school and socialize with friends.

However, now, the most common reason for college student sex work in Japan seems to be to pay for tuition. A sensationalist book called Joshidaisei-fuuzokujou [Female university student sex workers] has been published about how the most hard-working, studious students in Japan are forced to enter sex work because the Japanese economy is falling apart. It claims that sex work is a safety net in financially difficult times when it's becoming increasingly difficult to secure a job and pay for school[1].
